VOIP's Residential Growth in North America
Om Malik offers up his usual keen insight into market statistics being offered
by Frost & Sullivan about the North American VOIP market. Frost & Sullivan
suggests residential revenue will hit $4.07-billion by 2010 from $295.1 million
in 2004. Om does some math, and comes to the conclusion average revenue per
subscriber is $18 a month - making VOIP "nothing but a cheap tack-on service.
Unless you are bundling VoIP service with cable or DSL service, or packaging it
as a part of some triple-play offering, there is little chance of making money
in this game". Ouch! Perhaps the VOIP market's Achilles' Heel is starting to
reveal itself with the bottom line being there is little money to be made by
offering the service. If this is true, it spells bad news for Vonage and its IPO
aspirations, but great news for Skype, which is leveraging the growing demand
for ultra low-cost VOIP services.
Shaw's VOIP #s
Shaw Communications added 22.5K cable telephony customers in fiscal Q3 - the
first full quarter the service has been available from the Calgary-based cableco.
All in all, it's not a pretty good number given Shaw is charging $55 a month for
cable telephony - the most expensive VOIP service in Canada. There are some
suggestions Canadian cablecos (Rogers, Cogeco, Shaw) have decided to have
premium prices out of the gate to "control" demand and ensure customers who do
sign up are happy campers. Once any kinks have been worked out, the cablecos
could then get more competitive on price. Meanwhile, Videotron is having trouble
keeping up with strong demand for its cable telephony service that ranges from
$15.95 to $30 a month. Check out my posting earlier this week for a good look at
the VOIP pricing landscape in Canada.

Roughly half of all enterprise decision makers who responded to a recent In-Stat
survey indicated plans to purchase emerging telecom services -- such as VoIP
services and Integrated Access Services -- in the next 12 months. In-Stat
believes that the conditions are right for increasing adoption of integrated
access services and other IP services in this lucrative market of firms with
over 1,000 employees.
VoIP Phone Home?
Until genuine changes are made with SIP VoIP there does not appear to be a
convincing or compelling reason today for users to choose anything other than
P2P VoIP services such as Skype to render Internet "best effort" home phone
services.

FCC Extends VoIP 911 Deadline
a.different.perspect writes The Federal Communications Commission has extended
the deadline for formal acknowledgement of the limitations of the Enhanced 911
service used by VoIP providers by 30 days, to September 28. The FCC requires
that VoIP companies in the United States inform and receive acknowledgement from
all their customers of the pitfalls of E911, which corresponds 911 calls made on
a VoIP service with the physical address of the caller according to company
records but which wont report correct information if, for example, a customer
uses their VoIP phone away from their registered address. Currently 1.5 million
VoIP subscribers have ...
SBC VoIP Gets 911 Service Because SBC Owns the 911 Service
